Loaded subwoofer boxes are, in my opinion, the most fun car audio system upgrade. A car stereo without bass is like a taco without the salsa: I'll still enjoy it, but something's missing. A good subwoofer brings the spice back to bland tracks by adding powerful low end.

What is a loaded subwoofer box?

A loaded subwoofer box is a subwoofer that has been installed into an acoustic enclosure (see also, box). What a satisfying answer, right? To give you some clarity, I have to get a little technical.

Buckle up, buckaroo. I LOVE getting technical. (or run away: jump ahead to the first sub)

What is a ported or sealed subwoofer?

A ported box creates a booming bass experience; the box itself becomes what acoustical engineers call "resonance chambers". If you're familiar with how guitars work, you know that that the hole in a guitar behind the strings affects the sound quality as much as everything else.

A sealed box will recreate bass without necessarily using space to make the bass "bigger".

For the technical info on this topic, check out Crutchfield soundman Buck's article on sealed and ported subwoofer enclosures.

What should I look for when buying a subwoofer for my car?

The single, hands-down, most impactful feature to think about is: space. You can change the sound with an amplifier, but the amount of space you want to work with will always be limited. To install a loaded subwoofer enclosure, you need to find out how much space you're working with, and that's the one variable you can't change. Hence the tape measure.

Why we recommend these subwoofer boxes

Some of these are customer favorites top sellers rating 4 or 5 stars on our site. Others are boxes that we think have something special to offer. Either way, read on for our picks for the best loaded subwoofer enclosures.

1. The driver-centric underseat subwoofer — the Focal ISUB TWIN

Dual 100-watt subwoofers

The ISUB TWIN contains two loaded sub boxes, and each box has a small footprint. 6. Fits inside your spare tire — JBL Stadium BassHub

Sealed enclosure with 11" dual 4-ohm voice coil subwoofer

In most coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, and vans, the spare tire sits under a concealed panel in the trunk. You turn the spare tire upside down and install the sub inside the rim of the tire. It has a plug-in harness so that you can easily remove it if you actually need to use your spare tire.

How do I choose a good loaded sub box for my car?

Again, think about fit first, sound second. Once you decide how much space you have to work with, it's much easier to find a box that fits the dimensions you have. Then consider the type of sound you want after that.

A good loaded subwoofer box is engineered to create bass sounds.

An engineer (or a person who prefers words like "chamber" and "enclosure") took the time to measure invisible sound waves behind a subwoofer to figure out how they'll bounce inside that box. Almost any "unloaded" subwoofer could be made to sound "tight and punchy", or "loud and boomy", and that's based entirely on variables such as the shape, size, air flow, how well the box is sealed, the materials from which they build the box, etc. Let the sound engineers of any of these highly qualified brands do that work for you.

For most people, a loaded sub box is the most convenient choice

When you get a loaded sub box, you can skip the step where you become a sound engineer and invent your own "acoustical resonance chamber". And if you decide later you DO want to build your own, guess what, you can literally take the subwoofer out of the box it came in and build as many housings as you want.

Even builders and mechanics buy loaded subwoofer enclosures

Despite the fact that I have 8,000+ hours of experience building fancy wooden and veneered MDF boxes, I recommend getting a loaded box over building one. Decades of refinement go into these sub box designs to create the ideal bass box for a specific subwoofer.
